Hawaii is one of my absolute favourite places on the planet! In January I was there for a couple of days on the way back to Australia. I stayed in Honolulu but since Oahu is so small you can drive around it pretty easily, it only takes an hour to get from Honolulu to the North Shore. My favourite break is hands down Ala Moana Bowls, which is basically in front of the shopping centre with the same name! If you only have a few days there, these are the spots I try and visit every time.

I love the North Shore but for convenience staying in Honolulu puts you pretty close to everything. I try and avoid Waikiki as it’s super crowded and super touristy, but it’s worth visiting it at least once if just to look at the beach! My favourite surf break is Ala Moana Bowls, but watching Pipeline is an absolute must and the drive to get there is amazing. The North Shore has a nice small country town feel to it and you have to get an Acai Bowl from Haleiwa Bowls! Haleiwa also gets really good waves as well if you’re not ready for giant surf.

Diamond Head has a fun surf break and you can hike the crater as well. If you’re feeling super adventurous Koko Crater hike is almost completely vertical up what used to be a train track, and it’s pretty intense but the view at the top is unreal! Don’t go if you’re afraid of heights though. For a super easy to get to waterfall that is super beautiful, Manoa Falls is amazing! A short walk to get to and it just looks like something out of Jurassic Park.

Getting around Oahu on public transport is kind of difficult, so I’d definitely recommend renting a car! Plus all the roads go through beautiful

places so it’s a good way to see a lot quickly!

Hanauma Bay has world class snorkelling and so many fish! They’re not scared of you at all and the water is just so insanely beautiful. America isn’t known for great coffee, but my favourite cafe there is called Arvo and has an Aussie inspired menu featuring Vegemite Toast. Eating avo and Vegemite on toast while in Hawaii is pretty much my actual idea of heaven on Earth.

We also went on a helicopter tour around the island which was a great way to get an awesome perspective of Oahu!

Things I try to do every time I got to Oahu:

  1. Visit Whole Foods. I’m vegan so sometimes trying to find something to eat in Hawaii can be challenging, but Whole Foods always comes through with the goods.
  2. Haleiwa Bowls has the best acai bowls and then you can sit on the beach and eat them, and eating while on the beach is always my favourite thing to do.
  3. Surf(obviously). Ala Moana Bowls is my favourite break!
  4. Get a coffee from Arvo, and avo and vegemite on toast as well.
  5. Hike/visit a waterfall, sometimes both at once.
